Year 2 2025-26
Welcome to Year 2 at Northbrook Primary Academy.
Mr Knowles(Class Teacher)
Ms Hall (Teaching Assistant)
Miss King (Teaching Assistant)
Our learning journey in Year 2 continues from the meaningful learning that took place in Reception and Year 1.
We learn in a fun and stimulating environment that challenges pupils thinking and allows them to grow as individuals. The children are given many exciting and memorable opportunities to enhance their learning. We love to learn in a practical way and we enhance the learning by using our amazing outdoor areas.
In Year 2 we work as a team to build resilience, and we learn to believe in ourselves. This is embedded into every aspect of our curriculum and tie in with our school values of happiness, empathy, aspiration, respect and teamwork, which are at the heart of everything we do.
Our Year 2 inspirational person this year is Andrew Flintoff! Andrew Flintoff, also known as “Freddie,” is a former professional cricketer who played for England and became one of the country’s most well-known sports stars. He is admired not only for his amazing achievements on the cricket field but also for his determination, teamwork, and positive attitude.
Throughout the year, we will be learning about Freddie Flintoff's life, his sporting successes, and the challenges he faced along the way. The children will explore what it means to show perseverance, resilience, and kindness—qualities that Freddie has demonstrated throughout his career.
We use Seesaw as a communication tool, to share exciting news regarding learning and behaviour or simply share key messages with parents.
Our topics are fun and create awe and wonder. In order to prepare children for their future careers, we endeavour to inspire children to follow their dreams from becoming Scientists to Artists.
Reading
Reading is an essential part of your child’s education here at Northbrook and you can continue to support this at home. We expect all children to read at least four times each week and reading records will be collected and checked by Mr Knowles and Mrs Hall. Children are still developing their fluency and word reading skills and continuously revisiting and practising reading is the key to progress.
Maths
For our Maths lessons, we follow White Rose Maths. We will be starting the Autumn term with a unit on place value, before moving on to addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division.
We will also have a daily arithmetic session, which will focus on following Mastering Number, aims to help children with their recall of number facts and key mathematical information.
Our PE days are on Monday and Thursday and will continue to enhance the children’s fundamental movement skills which they have developed throughout their time in EYFS and Year 1.
At the start of each half term, children should bring their PE kits to school and leave them on their pegs. If you want your child to bring their PE kit home on a more regular basis to be washed, please do so but ensure it is sent back into school for their PE days. PE kits will be used on PE days only, and children will change into and out of their kits at school.
PE kits will be sent home at the end of each half term. If they become dirty during a PE lesson, they may be taken home earlier to be washed and then returned to school.
PE Kit:
- NPA purple PE T-shirt (round neck)
- Plain black shorts (must be longer than the T-shirt)
- Plain black jogging bottoms and the Northbrook purple hoodie (optional for outdoor PE only)
- Black plimsolls or black trainers for PE lessons.
