Malala Yousafzai

I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was ...WHM: Malala Yousafzai - Carolina Women's Center

At Northbrook, each of our classes is named after an inspirational person to help spark ambition, resilience, and curiosity in our learners. Our new class name is ‘Malala’ who is a Pakistani activist for girls’ education and the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She became internationally known after surviving a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012, at the age of 15, for speaking out about the rights of girls to go to school. Malala’s courage and advocacy have made her a global symbol of peaceful resistance and the fight for education and equality.

Reading

Reading is an essential part of your child’s education here at Northbook and you can continue to support this at home. We expect all children to read at least four times each week.  Reading records must be brought to school daily to be checked and rewarded. Children must complete activities on Reading Plus as part of their weekly reads.

Maths

For our Maths lessons, we follow White Rose Maths. We will be starting the Autumn term with a unit on place value, before moving on to addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division.

Within our arithmetic sessions, we will be using Fluent in Five alongside our times tables booklets to develop children’s fluency.

PE

Our PE days are Thursdays and Fridays.

Children will need their normal PE kit (Purple t-shirt, black shorts and pumps for indoors trainers for outdoors.). Please make sure your child's PE kits is labelled and in a bag on their peg in school as they will be getting changed in school.

Homework

Homework will be set each Monday and due the following Monday. Homework will consist of learning times tables and reading at home. Please ensure homework is handed in on time.

Spellings

We follow Read Write Inc for spelling and lessons will be taught daily in school.

In Autumn 1, we are focusing specifically on, ‘What might a Hindu learn through Diwali?’ and in Autumn 2, the focus will be, ‘How and why might Christians use the Bible?

In Art, we will be looking at how can we can combine paint and thread to create landscapes. In Science we will be looking at grouping and classifying living things, as well as, looking at the different states of matter. Our curriculum has been adapted this year to continue to offer the children a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum enriched with exciting adventures along the way!

The partnership between home and school is essential, thank you for your support and if you do have any questions, please ask.
